How to use the MCT Trails Map

Trail Info – Use this tool to click on a trail on the map to display the trail and its parking lots on the map (denoted by the “P” symbol), and a brief description of the trail at the bottom of the screen that includes the contact information for the organization responsible for the trail. This same functionality can be accessed by clicking on the trail name listed in the left-hand column on the Map home page. The trail description also contains the number of parking lots, with each parking lot number corresponding to a parking lot on the map. Moving the mouse over the parking lot number, the corresponding “parking lot on the map will highlight the “P” parking symbol in yellow, and clicking the parking lot number will open a new “MapQuest” window listing the parking lot’s address, which enables you to find driving directions to that lot from any other address.

Zoom-In - This tool allows you to zoom-in to any area of the map by either single-clicking on the map, or clicking and dragging a rectangle encompassing the area of interest.

Zoom-Out - This tool allows you to zoom-out to any area of the map by either single-clicking on the map, or clicking and dragging a rectangle encompassing the area of interest.

Measure – This tool enables you to measure any distance on the map by segment and total distance. For example, to plan a 1-mile bike ride on a particular trail, first select the trail and then click on the Measure tool to display a white box in the upper-right hand corner of the map with “Total” and “Segment” boxes. Click on the starting point on the trail for the ride which will then be denoted on the map with a red dot and change the cursor to a “+” sign on the map. Move the “+” sign along the trail and continue to do so until the “Total” box reaches 1 mile. Most of the trails do no follow a straight line, so to ensure the most accurate measurement, make small segments by following the trail as closely as possible on screen and clicking at every curve. Continue to make segments until the “Total” box in the upper right-hand corner of the map screen reaches a distance of “1 Mile.”

Clear – This tool completely resets the Measure tool.

Print – This tool prepares the map shown on the screen for printing. First, click on the icon to bring up the Print window in the bottom of the screen. In the Print window, enter a title for your map, select either portrait or landscape layout, and select either normal or low resolution. Next, click on the “Create Print Page” button in the Print window to bring up a print preview image. Finally, to print the map shown in the print preview, click “File” and then “Print,” or the Printer icon shown on the top toolbar.
